I was much more willing to stick my camera in others' faces then. These were taken in the elevator/library of Nove Miasto, a legendary punk co-op, during their licentious Valentines Day party, Booty 2000.

Glasgow School of Art Degree Show 2008

Paintings exhibited for my degree show at the Glasgow School of Art in June, 2008, as well as some which were submitted but not shown.

Climbing Ben Lomond

This turned out to be the last good hike of my time in Scotland. Perfect weather on the way up, unbelievable wind at the top, rain for two hours on the way down, and whisky by a coal fire on the ride home. First, instead of being a language, it may become a pseudo-language, a caricature of language, a sham, a kind of childish game on the theme of language, which does not succeed in achieving signification. -- Claude Levi-Strauss

This was my dissertation, submitted as part of my degree at Glasgow School of Art. It received distinction and a first-class mark. Synopsis:

In this dissertation I will present a critical analysis of the use of language in state-accredited art schools. Through the development of two case studies – that of the School of Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art and of the private, non-accredited Autumn River Tai Chi school – I will examine the relationship between the stated aims of each school and their obligations to account for their value to other parties. Taking a quasi-economic approach, I will attempt to develop a transactional model to represent the conditions of these obligations and claims. Building on the work of James Elkins and Howard Singerman, I will use the contrast between the two case studies to develop pertinent criticism of the role of language in art schools and departments, its relationship to fine art practice, and the politics of its influence.

Nancy Drew and the Case of Writer's Block

I can't really tell you what drove me to write a Nancy Drew story, or, rather, a story about Nancy Drew stories. It felt necessary, and I enjoyed it. I don't know why more authors don't use Nancy Drew. I don't know why I write anything without Nancy Drew in it anymore.

My great-grandfather

Jan, or Jon, Mieczkowski, was my great-grandfather. He came to Detroit from Poland, and was an active member of the Polish immigrant community. He was a painter, a sculptor, and an early fine-art photographer. He sang in a men's choir, and was a member of the Polish Falcons when they assisted Paderewski in defecting from Poland in protest.

gsapainting08.com

A Joomla-based site I made for the graduating class of the painting department at the Glasgow School of Art in 2008. A framework for 50+ users was needed on short notice that would allow each user to administer their own account. I designed the logo and the site to coordinate with the print catalogue, and created a simple lightbox-enabled article template compatible with Joomla. Unfortunately, the catalogue committee's email system failed to send out proper notifications about the site once I had completed it, so many students graduated before learning that the site was live. However, it continues to serve those who did take advantage of it.

Typography Sampler

A sampling of typography from print and online projects. Named after Blaise Pascal's early computing machine, I used Pascaline as my primary computer for a couple years, writing most of a novel on her. I quickly learned that people were much more willing to look at something on a computer if you could hand it to them and if it felt like a book.
